For Me

Updated: May 1, 2021

I was asked in one of my groups… what is recovery to you? Well, it is not an easily answered question. People say it is being sober, finding our triggers, learning coping skills and methods to deal with those triggers, trying every day not to relapse; going to meetings, groups, and treatment. Just trying to get by.

But it is so much more than that.

For a lot of us, it is a battle we fight every single day, doing everything and anything we can to win; to stay a step ahead, to not drown in the pressure of everyday life. It is a journey, day by day, to learn who we are inside and outside our addiction.

It is a struggle- a never-ending struggle. It is honesty. And when you become honest, it is painful; filled with tears, anger, fear, sadness, emptiness, guilt, and so much more. You must try and heal so that you can stay sober. In recovery, it is so many things and learning more every day.

I am not saying “do not try”, I am saying the exact opposite. It is worth every single step you take. It is one of the hardest things you could do, but one of the most rewarding. It is clarity. We all want clarity, right?

In short, it is a lifestyle; a way of living. Something you must embrace and let it take you over. You need to replace your addiction with your recovery. Every little thing you put into your addiction, while you were in it, you need to do that ten times over with your recovery.

You are recovery! Live it. I do, for me.
